As Kevri and Onikor approached Holstein’s village, they could see the flickering light of a fire illuminating the dusky sky. The closer they got, the more they could smell the smoke and the roasted meat. Kevri felt a pang of hunger in her stomach as she had been walking for hours without a proper meal.

As they approached the campfire, an anxious Miktar made his presence known behind them. “What a relief. It’s just you two.”

Onikor pulled the hilt of his blade and swiftly turned to face him in a guard position. Letting out a startled gasp, Miktar raised his spear at him. “Onikor!” Kevri squealed, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Put your sword down!”

“Miktar!” Holstein—who had been busy tending to the fire—walked over to see what the commotion was about. “I told you this was foolish. You got them all startled.”

“It was for our safety!” Miktar exclaimed, his voice quivering.

Holstein let out a deep sigh. “I’m sure we’d all have felt quite safe after seeing your face cleaved. Not to mention we could’ve lost our only chance at finding Nyeri.” Miktar’s face weakened at the remark, his grip on his weapon loosening.

Onikor turned to face Holstein as he lowered his greatsword. “Still worried we’d come back to string you up I see.”

“Miktar is a coward.” Holstein shrugged. “My sincerest apologies.”

“My cowardice is what prevents us all from getting killed,” Miktar muttered under his breath.

“Whatever,” Onikor dismissed. “Which direction did this friend of yours get herself lost?”

“Right to business, then?” Holstein asked.

“I want my prize as soon as possible,” Onikor replied.

“Yes, of course. Right this way. And Miktar, get Alberic.” Without a word, Miktar walked over to one of the houses with pace. Holstein led Kevri and Onikor to the outskirts of the village. He pointed northward. “Miktar claimed she wandered off that way while hunting two days ago, never to return.”

“You sure he didn’t scare her off?” Onikor smirked.

“As humorous as that may be, Miktar proved to be the closest to her,” Holstein said. “They’re good friends.”

“Surprising,” Onikor replied.

“So, we just have to look for her in a certain direction?” Kevri blurted.

“Not look, Kevri, hunt,” Onikor said firmly.

“We’re here, Holstein,” Miktar announced, approaching the three with Alberic.

“These are the two you want us to search with?” Alberic spat. “The girl already seems half-dead.”

“Not like you lot have made progress,” Onikor snapped. “She’s been lost for how long now?”

“Gentlemen, you’re going to need to get along,” Holstein interrupted. “Miktar’s been searching for days so it would only make sense for him to lead the search. And Alberic—for all we know—they could be quite adequate hunters.”

“No need to worry about us getting along,” Onikor said. “Kevri and I will be leading our own search. Good day, gentlemen.”

“Huh?” Holstein looked flabbergasted as Onikor strode away with Kevri trailing behind him.

Leaving the outskirts behind, they wasted no time venturing into the nearby forest. Onikor moved with a sense of urgency, hardly observing his surroundings as he went. Kevri struggled to keep up. “Shouldn’t we move a little slower?”

“If she’s lost, she went far,” Onikor explained.
